With record heat and fires only 8 km away, the trees had many potential threats, but nearly all our trees survived another year. We credit this to there being more rain around than the year before. We had a late deluge in November and December which topped up the soil moisture for the long dry summer. It was also really obvious that many of the trees had successfully established their roots - allowing one Blue Gum to grow nearly three metres in the 12 month period!
In the first year after planting, we lost approximately 30% of our trees. So this year, we’ve been busy transplanting saplings that have naturally germinated from our mature Gums. We’ll keep adding 50 new trees each year to supplement the casualties.
As usual, our resident “foliage” reporter, Nicole Godfrey, with the help of some special guests, gives us a video update of our reforestation project.
We can’t wait to show you the progress in 12 months time. With the economy tanking, it’s a great feeling to know that something’s growing!
